Abstract:Under the continuous advancement of urbanization, a large number of previously overlooked gap spaces in urban planning have increasingly highlighted their social and cultural value. Based on Lefebvre's "space production" theory and the perspective of everyday urbanism, this study selects the space under the elevated bridge of the Suzhou River as the research sample to analyze how such sites, which have both physical and social marginal attributes, have become carriers of residents' spontaneous activities. The bottom-up autonomous usage behavior of residents not only enriches the daily use function of the space but also builds neighborhood ties and shapes local identity at the micro scale. However, these informal practices often face practical difficulties such as the lack of compliance and the potential for the space to be renovated or evicted. The article compares the typical practice of three types of sites: the Central Ring Sports Space, the space under the Cao Yang Bridge, and the Jing'an Skate Park, to explore the collaborative path between informal spontaneous activities and professional design intervention. The research shows that social design centered on deep community participation can strengthen the weak relationship network of the community, cultivate a sense of local cultural belonging, achieve a positive symbiosis between folk spontaneous practices and standardized space design, and help with the long-term construction of the community.
